| The ‘Ville San Gregorio’ are situated in the heart of the Umbrian valley thus it is easy to reach the most beautiful artistic centres and other areas of the region. The ‘Ville’ are only 3km from the center of Bettona, a city of ancient Etruscan origin, founded between 8 and 7 BC. The village is situated on the top of a hill, at the confluence of the Chiascio and Topino rivers; this favourable position made the fortune of ancient Bettona. Still well-preserved are the walls built to defend the city, rebuilt in1377 when Bettona was taken over by the Perugians and put under Papal control. In Bettona the oldest houses all had a small orchard-garden with a tank for rainwater and a well. And today the city is characterized by the many gardens within the city walls. Worth visiting is the convent of Santa Maria Maggiore built in the 13th Century and which was transformed in the 17th Century; l’Oratorio di Sant’Andrea where a fresco was discovered in 1394, the Palazzo Comunale and the church of San Crispolto, patron saint of the city. Situated in the central piazza is the Pinoteca Comunale where artistic works of great value can be found, including two works by Pietro Vannucci or ‘Perugino’: Sant’Antonio of Padua and the Devoted (1512), from the ex convent of San Crispolto, and Madonna della Misericordia with Saint Stefano and Saint Girolamo and followers (1520) from the church of S.
